Ray
Skipper
Ray Skipper, a household
name from the Rowley Park Speedway era, died on 13 January at the Royal Adelaide
Hospital from the effects of cancer. He was aged 71.
Skipper started his racing career at Rowley Park in 1956, aged 20, driving a
Hambly-Clark owned stock car #37, and progressed through to the sportsman class,
then a succession of super modifieds to be one of the best in that section.
He became widely known, racing in Western Australia ,Victoria, New South Wales
and at all SA tracks.
During the 1960s his best wins came with the Victorian Hot Rod Title at
Maribyrnong in December 1962 and later at Rowley in the 1966/67 25 lap SA Derby,
then the SA 30 lap Championship the following year.
He was also one of the group, with Kevin Fischer, Cec Eichler and Rex Sendy, who
promoted Rowley Park after Kym Bonython stepped down in the early 1970s.
A mechanic by trade, Ray built many of his cars and operated a succession of
different brand service stations. He is survived only by a sister and was
privately cremated.
